How much money does it take to get started on a shooting hobby?

I'm getting close to the right age in my state, and thinking of buying a firearm. I have hunted before, but I'm not that good of a shot, so I'd mostly just keep it for range shooting and stuff. How much money does it take to buy a shotgun/rifle and what cost yearly? Any estimate would work nicely.|||You can pick up a .22 rifle for under $250.

500 rounds of .22LR for about $20

Hearing protection runs $12 or so at Walmart

And my gun club is $22 a year.

If you want more guns or shoot more than 500 rounds a year it's going to cost more|||Generally it's best to start out with an old reliable that has stood the test of time as nearly everyones first gun. A good .22 rifle, or more specifically a bolt action .22 rifle.

You can still buy one new from many different manufacturers for $150 to $200. You can also find many used bolt action .22 rifles for $100

The benefits from starting with one of these is that they are very easy to shoot, have no recoil, are very quiet compared to all other guns and the ammo is very cheap at $1.60 for 50 rounds.

If you don't feel comfortable with the open sights you can buy a good 3-9X40 scope for an additional $35-$40.

No matter the case have someone with more experience teach you how to handle the firearm safely then how to shoot it properly.

Gun ranges are typically expensive so unless your going to be very serious about shooting your gun it might be best to head for the outdoors with a mentor and find a safe place to shoot where it's legal to do so.

Once you feel comfortable with a .22 you can move up at your own pace (or budget) into more and better firearms for your collection.|||it depends, new or used and what caliber/gauge

a new break action shotgun can be as cheap as $100

a used break action shotgun can be cheaper than $100(i saw a used 12 gauge for $75 and considered getting it)

a used pump action shotgun can be as cheap as $160 or less

a new single shot .22 can be as cheap as $100

a new semi auto .22 can be as cheap as $150

a military surplus mosin nagant can be $80 or cheaper at a gun show

a military surplus sks can be had for $350

a .308 or .223 bolt action can be had for around $300

12 gauge ammo is around $.25 cents for skeet shot

.22 ammo is around $.03 a shot

7.62x39mm for an sks or ak 47 is around $.25 a round

.223 is around $.25 a round

.308 can be had for around $.35 a round

military surplus ammo for the mosin nagant can be had for $.21 cents a round, but you have to clean the gun after shooting because the ammo is corrosive and will start corroding the barrel after about day i think

EDIT:

if your gonna get a shotgun and can handle a 12 gauge, get one as they have the cheapest ammo|||I saved for 12 years by the time I turned 18 so I could buy a gun. Had $3700 saved up. Even that I spent carefully, My first rifle, magazines, targets, ammunition was around $350.

A Marlin 925r .22lr bolt action rifle ($149.95 at Big 5 Sporting Goods)

A case of Walmart .22lr ammo (5,500 rounds for $103) the first of 4 cases and 10 year's supply of .22lr ammo

A half dozen spare 10 rd magazines ($50)

$25 for DROS and $5 for dealer's fee.

A bunch of cheap paper targets, pack of 100, 50 yard small bore rifle type ($5)

since then somethings have increase in price- ammo for example I believe walmart still has no .22lr in stock. Instead of 9.97 per brick, you'll be spending $22.50 per 500 rds.

My Marlin 925r rifle is still being sold at Big 5, but at the lowest its around $179.99.

So the basics- $180 for a rifle, $25 for ammo, $5 for targets, $11 for cleaning kit, $30 for DROS/fee, its $250 or so to get into shooting.

Less if you have previous experience and able to buy a used .22lr in good condition via PPT sales. Then you can get it for under $200.|||What kind of range?

You shoot 'clays' with a shot-gun, Paper targets with a rifle.

If you're just starting out, start with the .22 rifle and paper targets.

You'll need 'lotsa' practice and the ammo is the cheapest you can get for it.

( About 5 cents a shot for .22 vs 50 %26amp; up for that shot-gun.)

You'll spend about $200-300 for a good servicable

.22 rifle,

$25-30 on eye and ear protection and some targets,

and that's all you really need to get a start.|||Well son, your question is pretty vague. A rifle can range from $100 to many thousands. The same is true with a shotgun.

Ammo pricing is also subjective. You can buy 500 .22lr cartridges for $10 or pay around $80 for one .700 Nitro.

I'd recommend getting a nice bolt action .22LR or a Ruger 10-22 rifle to start out with. They are cheap to buy and to feed. You will be able to practice you shooting skills with out breaking the bank.|||How much? Here's a rough breakdown:

Rifle/shotgun - Medium Cost Ranges $350-$600

Scope - $100-$550

Ammo - depends on how much shooting at $12/20 rounds or 500 rounds of .22 - $35 per box

Cleaning Kit - $40

Range fee - best to join as a member $15 per session or $90-$140 per year membership

Targets - $5-$15 per package (depends on what). You can always just shoot paper plates

Eye and Ear protection - $15-$100

So, for the first year $715 - $1790 going 10 times to the range.

Second year and so forth $270 - $500 (excludes cost of firearm).|||If your just going to be target shooting get a shotgun so you can shoot skeet. You could get a remington 870 mossberg 500 or a cheap stoeger double for about $300 im not sure how the quality is on the stoegers though.|||Man, if you want to know how much it costs to get started ill tell you, about 200-600 for a nice gun, rifle. 150 yearly for rounds and whatever your range fee is.|||i would say between 300-1000 depending on what want you want. You could buy a .22 cal for next to nothing but when you start to get bigger you spend more money.|||Your looking at $700-$1000 to get started, get enough ammo, cleaning supplies, the gun and classes if you wish to take them.|||A Marlin Model 60 will set you back less than $200.

550rds of Federal .22 LR cost around $15 at Walmart

To check for a range in your area.

http://www.USAshooting.com//clubMap.php|||varies in price from $200 up.If you on a tight budget get decent secondhand gun this will save you lots of money that you could use to buy a decent scope.|||it costs your morals, conscience and soul :)
