What is the best camcorder I could use for shooting high definition short movies?

I am looking for a camcorder so I can use it for personal use at the same time for shooting high definition movie quality shots.|||Top of the shop Sony. I've used the DR100 (over the shoulder job) and the top end commercial model. Both are broadcast quality.

How often can you go shooting without hearing protection before permanant hearing damage takes place?

I often go shooting for sport and self defense training. I know that it is valuable to occasionally shoot your firearm without hearing protection for real life training scenarios. But how often is too much? I do it about twice a year without hearing protection. Is even this infrequent exposure doing irreversible damage to my hearing or not?|||I guess it would depend on how long you are at the range.

Twice a year is not bad, it's the amount of time you spent there.

I used to work in a machine shop and always wore ear protection. we took hearing tests every year and some guys had a slight hearing loss after only a year.

For your protection, if you plan on being there, lets say for 3 hours, you might want to split your time in half.

1 1/2 hrs with protection, 1 1/2 without.

Hope this answers your question

How can I increase my shooting percentage in a game?

When I practice, I generally have a much higher accuracy shooting the ball than when I am in a game. For some reason, when I'm in a game, my shooting percentage dramatically decreases? Why is that and how can I correct this?|||It's mental.

Really, this is perfectly normal. It takes experience, i.e. playing time to get used to the stress of an actual game situation.

There's nothing at stake in practice.

I find it's shot selection. It takes a certain amount of discipline to pass on low percentage shots, or shots where you're not square with good mechanics.

Personally, I would focus on good mechanics, and stay with the fundamentals.

Bigsby gave you some good tips on simulating defenders, and distraction. Maybe those will work.|||You should try to shoot more. If that doesn't work try to be a more confident shooter. shoot closer to the basket.|||DON'T MISS!!!|||Make more baskets.|||take better shot selections and dont force layups or shots.

1. Play one on one with a teammate to simulate actual game scenario %26amp; execute your usual moves %26amp; shots

2. Still practice hundreds on shots a day (there's always room for improvement)

3. Continue to shoot no matter what, Shooting is both skill %26amp; a confidence thing

* Even an NBA player have games that he can't hit his usual shot %26amp; is struggling shooting the ball. But they are able to bounce back %26amp; show what they can do because they have 3 things: Proper mindset, skill %26amp; confidence.|||When you are practicing you are not being guarded that is why there is big disparity.

I am not sure if you've watched the movie "ABOVE THE RIM" when the guy practice his moves with and without the ball. I do the same thing, I practice my jab step, head fakes, fadeaways, hop step, and a mini jump hook when I practice. I do all the motions to ensure that I am simulating a real game. If you watch NBA players practice, they don't just shoot, they work on their footwork and then take the shot.

Here are some drills that might help you

1) Place chairs on the areas of the court that you like to shoot, dribble to those spots and try to simulate the game situation and take the shot

2) Have a friend carry a broomstick and hold it up while you are trying to move around it and shoot over it. That will simulate someone trying to block you. This will help your concentration.

3) Use some leg weights that you can buy in the sport store. This will simulate late game body conditioning and will increase your stamina

4) Use the glass when you are 6-10 feet away and while you are at an angle against the rim

What is the difference between shooting in B&W compared to colour and then transforming it to B&W?

Here's a question that I have wondered. Whats the difference in shooting in B%26amp;W compared to shooting in colour then making it B%26amp;W?

Say in a digital sense and in a film sense.|||It is the way the pixels capture the image and the interpolation used.

In digital, I always recommend shooting in color, RAW images, and later translate to B%26amp;W. This gives you total control on the way the B%26amp;W images look as you can emphasize a color and use the RGB layers as you would filters on a lens to create the exact effect you want.

In film, I would recommend shooting in B%26amp;W and use lens filters to create effect. You would have all the silver halides available to capture your image. Why? Because color film has three separate layers (sensitive to Red, Green, and Blue light). You would actually negate the color effect of some of the layers when using lens filters)|||Shooting in color requires different lighting, different background so the color contrast is more evident without overpowering the facial features.

Black and White has a more subdued lighting and personally, it is just as hard to take a b/w. Again, the lighting is so much more important.

As for digital, it does not have the warmth of a film no matter what anybody says.

P.S. You can always convert to b/w from color. Now, take that same pic in b/w and compare it. You will see a noticable difference.|||If you let the camera decide what to do, you are depending upon the algorithms designed by engineers ... not necessarily visually creative.

By shooting in colour, you are capturing RBG data (nearly three times the data when comparied to the "in camera black" and white files.

Using the saturation feature to desaturate the colour image, then using the levels tool, set the black threshold, white threshold and then adjust the mid-tones to the best looking black and white range.|||Can't really give you a good answer (already given here anyway)--but when I convert one from RAW in Adobe Lightroom, it gives me a few ways to adjust all sort of settings, like this:

What is the best type of hearing protection for shooting with a scoped rifle?

I just assembled a beautiful AR15 with a 24 inch barrel and a Magpul adjustable stock to be used for long distance recreational target shooting. However, I can't look through the scope with my earmuffs on.|||I agree with vangion. Get the rubber style plugs with the cords on them. If you ever visit a military rifle range, you will usually see the rang masters using these. They generally attach them to their campaign hats and push them in their ears when the firing is about to commence (the rest of the time, they strut around like big shots).

|||I build match AR's. And I am an audio engineer.

Your AR will crank out 137db of noise. Anything over 92db for four hours requires hearing protection. Each time the db level goes up by 3db it actually is a doubling of the noise. Example 93db is twice as loud as 90db. You will find the db rating on the package for the muffs and ear plugs.

The slim over the ear muffs are only good for 19 to 22 db. It's a help, but that extra noise that comes in will ruin your hearing over time. Once gone, hearing never, ever, comes back.

To shoot your AR you will want to use both inside the ear plugs and external muffs. You need to get that noise level down into the low 90's.

An alternate is buy a suppressor - like I did. Consider it an investment in your hearing - you do not want to have two hearing aids like I ended up with after a lifetime of shooting. My AR becomes totally quiet with subsonic ammo and is only 103db of ballistic crack with factory ammo. This means the really comfortable muffs work well.

Hope this helps |||There are several brands of ear muffs on the market. If none of these will work for you, you will need to go to ear plugs. Buy the plugs with the highest NRR rating. The good ones will have an NRR rating of 23 or higher. I have found that the foam plugs that you roll up and stick in your ear to work best for me and are the most comfortable to wear for long periods of time. The next best are the molded ones with 2 or 3 flanges to seal off your ear canal. These are quite good, too but some people do not find them to be as comfortable as the foam ones. You can also buy custom moulded ear plugs but I have tried them also and found that after a while they had become deformed from being stored in their little box and did not seal my ear canals as well as they did when brand new. They are expensive and not worth the money in my estimation. If you can getthehmoldedd plugs or foam plugs with a string running between them, I think they are best because you can remove them and let them hang on your neck and not loose them as you might if you removed the unattached plugs from your ears temporarily. Also the plugs on the string tend to remain clean longerbecausee they are no laid down on a dirty surface like non-attached plug are.|||I would use industrial ear plugs with high decibel protection. And make sure you properly install them in your ears. Lift up the tippy top of your ear as if your trying to make them pointy like an elf. This will open up and expose the ear canal. Then roll the ear plugs between your fingers and then insert. The ear plugs should puff back up and seal your ear canal.|||Rubber ear plugs like the military uses can be found for cheap at any store that sells guns

How does the length of a shotgun barrel affect shooting it?

How does the length of a shotgun barrel affect shooting it? For example about 20" for personal defense or 28" for hunting. What's the difference?|||at one time when we had only much slower burning powders a 26 to 28" barrel was needed to reach standard velocities. Going with a 20" barrel significantly reduced the velocity of the shot. This is also when you used to run across 30, 32, and even 36" 'goose barrels' as those extra long barrels were able to capture every last bit of energy in the gunpowder and use it to have the highest velocity shot.

Now with modern powders a wad of shot will reach 95% of full velocity at around 12" to 15" of barrel, and the gain from each additional inch of barrel is extremely small.

HOWEVER most wingshooters agree that the longer barrel swings more smoothly which allows for better accuracy vs small moving targets, so 26" barrels are the norm for hunting

Home defense, the 20" or 18" barrel is preferred because it is easier to manuever around a house with a shorter barrel. 16" or 14" would be even better but those are restricted by some outdated silly laws.

P.S. Contrary to what TV and movies would have you think a shortened barrel does NOT increase the spread of the shot, not until you get down to about 6" or 8" of barrel, but by then you are significantly reducing your shot velocity (and hence it's power) for a very small increase in spread. And honestly serious shotgunners do the opposite, they put special chokes in their barrel to keep the spread of the shot tight.|||The choke determines the pattern, not the barrel length.

The longer the barrel, the longer the sight radius, the easier it is to hit things a long ways away, such as geese. As a bonus, you may get a bit more velocity from more complete powder combustion. Noise will also be reduced.

A shorter barrel is easier to follow a fast moving target, close up with. It makes it more adept to environments with obstructions, such as walls, doors, dense underbrush, etc. It may suffer a bit in velocity, but does that really matter when you are welcoming an uninvited visitor with 1 1/2 oz of buck shot across the hallway?

Notice how the shot pattern has nothing to do with it? If you want a short shotgun for hunting deer in dense underbrush, you want a short barreled shotgun with a full choke. For home defense, you would be better served with a short barreled shotgun with a cylinder choke.|||Shotgun barrel length only effects it if it has no choke. Without a choke the barrel decides how spread out the shot will be cut to the time it stays in the barrel. So an 18" barrel will have a larger pattern at close ranges than a 26" barrel. However a 26" barrel will have the same pattern at say, 30 yards as that 18" at 5 yards.|||Nothing. But the longer barrel does give more velocity and better sight picture due to the extra length. It's not the barrel but the choke that affects spread. Your standard shorter 18-20 inch barrel is usually a cylinder bore; there is no choke so your spread is wider. On longer barrels they tend to either have type of choke designed into the barrel or can take detachable ones. Those affect shot spread.|||The condensed version of it is that a long barrel offers a longer sighting plane and a smoother swing than a shorter barrel. This makes it much easier to point, not aim, the shotgun to where you want your load of shot to meet the target.

Other than that, a long shotgun barrel offers little more than increased bulk.|||White, The longer the barrel, the longer the shot will stay together before it starts to spread out.

What are some remedies for cross dominance for shooting?

For example would it be feasible to shoot a rifle with the left hand and pistol with the right?

Or do you recommend shooting both left?

Or both right?

I am a beginner, so I kind of want to learn how to shoot the right way before I develop too many bad habits.

Thanks|||Don't worry about it.

You should shoot a handgun, shotgun and machinegun with both eyes open. Your dominate eye will take over. The reason you want both eyes open is that when you are in a combat situation you want to have a full field of vision. If you close one eye, you lose that side of you and you will not be able to see a threat coming from that side.

If you are shooting a scoped rifle you should use your dominate eye and close the other.

When I shoot right or left handed I use my dominate eye, all you have to do is bring the weapon over to your dominate eye side just a little bit.

A lot of instructors get stuck on the dominate/cross eye dominate theories, the truth of the matter is to just use what works best for you. If you can leave both eyes open, then do so. If you have to close one eye, then do so. If you shoot a rifle left handed and your handgun right handed, it doesn't really matter as long as you are making consistently good hits with your weapons. I have a personal friend that is a combat veteran, he was in Mogadishu when the Black Hawk Down incident happened. He fires a rifle right handed, but shoots a pistol, shotgun and machinegun left handed.

Bruce Lee said: "The only way is no way and no way is the only way." What he meant by that is that there is no one true style or one tactic or one technique that works for every occasion or for every person.

So, what are the remedies for cross eye dominance? Use what works best for you. Don't fight what your body wants to do. Work with your body and adapt to it.|||You can shoot however works best for YOU.

IF you are left eye dominant, it would probably be easier to learn to shoot both left-handed.

MOST center-fire rifles and some semi-auto handguns can be obtained for left-handed shooters. (A revolver doesn't matter as it does NOT eject the empty cases while firing.)

As another answerer stated, you can use a patch to train yourself to use the right eye for shooting.|||I am right handed and left eye dominant. When pistol/handgun shooting, i keep both eyes open and aim with my left eye. I find that the classic weaver stance is the most comfortable and accurate.

With rifles (scoped or not) and shotguns, I close my left eye. Quite frankly, this is not a big issue for targets or hunting. Dont try to shoot a rifle or shotgun left handed, you'll drive yourself crazy.

The more important things to focus on is proper grip technique, proper shooting stance, proper sighting, etc. To really learn to shoot well, find an NRA instructor (check gun shops for contacts) and other companies that offer CCW/CHL/CPL classes. DO that as soon as possible, before you develop bad habits!|||When I was eight and at Y camp learning to shoot, it turns out that I was left eye dominant and right handed. The counselors taught me to shoot long guns left handed. As I got older, I was able to close my left eye and shoot right handed so that is how I learned to shoot hand guns. To this day I shoot hand guns right handed and alternate on long guns.

Try putting a patch over the left eye. With just the one eye functioning, you can shoot right handed without interference. Or shoot left handed, but it is harder to find left handed long guns.|||My son is like that. I bought him an eye patch at Walgreen's to wear over his left eye so he can shoot right handed. What is the difference between shooting in B&W compared to colour and then transforming it to B&W?

Here's a question that I have wondered. Whats the difference in shooting in B%26amp;W compared to shooting in colour then making it B%26amp;W?

Say in a digital sense and in a film sense.|||I'll be quick now and answer more thorough later this evening.

In a film sense, B%26amp;W film will gives you much better contrast then shooting with color film and trying to process it (chemically) to be black and white. With film however, you'll want to probably use a filter (yellow, orange, red, etc) to achieve the look you want.

With Digital, it's actually better to always shoot in color. You can use something like Channel Mixer in Photoshop to yield a much better black and white image than the B%26amp;W setting on your camera. Plus, you'll still have the color version in case it is also useful. Desaturating an image to make it B%26amp;W is the easiest, but often the worst way to make an image B%26amp;W. I always shoot in RAW so I can decide if I want it in color or black and white and not have to worry about losing any information.|||Good question! I would like to know the answer to this too!

What is a good 40 cal. handgun to get for someone looking to start competition shooting?

I own a H%26amp;K 40 cal. handgun and enjoy shooting, but I don't like the long trigger pull on the H%26amp;K. I am looking into shooting at the competition level and need advice on a good handgun to practice on and possibly buy. Any ideas on what brands and types to try? I am not sure what brands are best for a beginner in competition shooting.|||Smith and Wesson M%26amp;P|||Beretta is great and so is the XDM. The 40 is great because it isn't as expensive and it has power. Some of my local Competitions don't like the 9mm because it won't knock down the targets that are being used. I would check the local rules and the type of guns that are recommended. Overall the 40 is a great choice over all shooting.

For serious shooting guns look at something you can light the lbs of pull for the trigger and watch the safety placement. The Beretta px4 storm is horrible because the safety flicks up and then you have your finger back down. There is a lot of different things to look for cutting time when in competition.|||I don't think .40 S%26amp;W is a good choice for competition shooting personally. The ballistic properties of that round don't interest me.

If I had to guess right now I would say the most popular COMPETITION pistol is the tried and true 1911 in .45 ACP.

Of course, there are many upgrades and add-ons for competition pistols and many people shoot competitively with other handguns (such as Glocks, H%26amp;K, Sig, etc).|||It would be a good idea to decide on which type of pistol competition you want to be in e.g. IPSC or IDPA, then go to a few matches, talk to the competitors, decide if that is what you really want to do, then buy what they use.

It would really suck to buy a gun for competition then find out it is the wrong one.|||Under normal circumstances you would never hear me say this but I would recommend a 9mm if you don't want to go the route of a 1911 in 45ACP.

The 9mm Para travels faster and provides less recoil therefor sight on target is faster.

There are quite literally thousands of 9mm pistols out there so it comes down to how much you are willing to spend and what feels best for you.|||If 40SW is subpar for competition, I wonder why SO MANY IPSC and IDPA shooters use it?

Slide film is very unforgiving when it comes to overexposure. I always use a Sekonic hand light meter. Until you are sure about the accuracy of your in-camera light meter...do not trust it for important images.

Personally, with Velvia 50 in bright sunlight I will underexpose by 1/3 of a stop. Tends to make the colors pop and it gives me a margin of error.

Congratulations on choosing slide film. You will be awed by the colors and sharpness.|||Exposure is critical when shooting slide film. I used slide film to test my exposure meter in my camera. I found out that my meter is off by a stop.

What sort of microphone should i get, for shooting a film?

In a few weeks, I'll be shooting a film with some friends. However the sound quality on the camcorder that we're using, isn't good enough for us to use.

I've looked at microphones which I could buy, but I wouldn't know enough about them to trust the sound quality or range. With a budget of about 拢90, could anyone give any suggestions or advice, on what sort of alternative to use?|||First, we don't know which camcorder you are using, so we don't know if it has a way to connect a mic.

Second, there is no single mic. Most common might be a shotgun mic - decent ones use an XLR connector and not the 1/8" (3.5mm) common to the few consumer camcorders that have audio-in.

Use of a 1/8" (3.5mm) to XLR "tail" is not recommended because you risk stress on that connection and breaking the 1/8" (3.5mm) connector off in the camcorder. To connect an XLR-connector based mic to a 1/8" (3.5mm) audio-in jack, it is STRONLY recommended that an XLR adapter be used (see those from juicedLink or BeachTek as examples).

If your camcorder has no mic jack, then capturing the audio externally will be needed. There are several ways to do this - the preferred method is to use an audio "field recorder" like one from Zoom, Tascam, Edirol - among many others. Some have built-in mics, some require an external mic.

If your computer has only a 1/8" (3.5mm), you will need to be careful with the length of the cable connecting the mic to the camcorder. Typically, the cable(s) used by these consumer-grad mics are not shielded and it the cable length is over 15 feet or so, you run the risk of picking up Radio Frequency or Electro-magnetic interference (RFI/EMI). The resolution is to use shielded (or balanced) cables (which is why XLR is preferred, especially for long cable runs).

Also, keep in mind that most shotgun mics in the range you are looking at are mono mics and will only record to one channel in the camcorder - this can be fixed when you edit (with an audio tool like Audacity).

In your budget range, the best I can come up with is the mono-shotgun Audio-Technica ATR6550 - and this assumes your camcorder has only a 3.5mm audio-in jack. You may need to get an extension cable.

If you want stereo, then the Audio Technica PRO24-CM or ATR6250 - neither are shotgun mics but are decent consumer grade stereo condenser mics. An extension cable will likely be required for them as well.

How can i get the right technique for shooting with my left foot?

My technique is really bad, i cant seem to get the right shooting/ crossing technique. Please help! When ever i kick the ball it curves(i dont want it) and i dont seem to be able to keep my foot pointing down on a laces shot|||keep using it you are going to find out.

you need to practice more so you will know what your doing|||well to tell u the truth ... its not ur left foot thats the problem...its ur right foot. ur right foot isnt used to balancing while ur kicking therefore ur kick will be curved or w/e. this is wat the highskewl coach told me wen i asked him why. just keep trying to build up balance in ur left foot...|||Practice until you feel like your foot is going to fall off. It is all about muscle memory. The best way to gain the memory is work yourself close to exhaustion and let the motion become fluid so that it feels natural and you are not consciously thinking about what you are doing.|||Like the person above me said practice, practice and practice some more. If you have like any type of wall you can use knock the ball against the wall, trap it, kick it again until you are comfortable with both feet.

What do you think usually causes a school shooting?

I've watched Bowling for Columbine and a Lifetime movie about school shootings. Along with the Degrassi episode on it. I'm just curious to what others think. Can video games honestly lead to a school shooting?|||There are different kinds of school shootings. Most school shootings involve one person shooting one other person, when the two have already been conflict over something. That may be caused by gang culture or other life problems.

Mass shootings like Columbine or Virginia tech are a different phenomenon. But again, there are two main categories; when the killer is sane, and when he is insane. By sane, I mean that the person understands the nature of his actions and knows that they are wrong. The Columbine killers are in this category. They reveled in the joy of killing. By insane, I mean the killer either doesn't understand the nature of his actions, or doesn't understand that they are wrong. I think the Virginia Tech killer was in this category. He believed that the whole world was conspiring to make him miserable, and that this bloodshed would have some kind of redemptive quality, like the death of Christ. That is crazy.

Now as to video games. I don't believe they cause normal people to want to hurt anybody. However, an unbalanced person immersed in the intensity of virtual battle may be affected that way. On the other hand, he may get some catharsis out of the game and not feel the need to act it out in reality.

The main danger with certain video games is that they are designed to help soldiers to increase their kill ratio in battle. People have an instinctive revulsion for killing other people, even when they have a good reason. Therefore in the past, many soldiers haven't even fired their guns in battle, or have shot over or to the side of the enemy. These games are designed to condition you to shoot effectively in a battle situation. This is fine for battle, and normal people know when they are in a battle and when they are not. However, somebody that simply wants to kill a lot of people, or who believes he is at war when he is not, may use these games to prepare for the massacre.|||an interesting artistic approach to the same kind of events in finland: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vw2-mpKqgzw

|||Most people say being bullied is what causes school shootings. The Columbine killers were not really bullied, but they did get made fun of for being different. I think that video games play a part in it too. Also the stereotypes of highschool and how it makes it hard for one to fit in. Hating the in-justice of the school. But anyone can pick up a gun and kill people, but some are actually crazy enough and mentally disturbed to do it.|||Mental illness.

They all had disturbed personalities and problems in life. In school shootings, they had a grudge against everyone even if they didn't know them.

Video games are just scapegoats for the media to easily blame. It is impossible to prevent mentally ill people from cracking and killing people. Mentally ill people are completely unpredictable and hard to figure out.|||Honestly I do not know how a video game could lead to any violence, the same with cartoons.

BULLYING at school can be very traumatic(I know it happened to me). Promised myself before I became a parent, that it would never happen to my children.

What is a good air rifle to start shooting with?

Hey, I'm interested in getting into shooting with an air rifle (You know, the pellet kind) and trying to find a good air rifle to begin with. Wondering if anyone could tell me from experience what a good starting rifle is. I've seen a 760SK Air Rifle but need some advice on it. Not looking for something too expensive either.|||The Daisy 880S is $35-40 at Wal-Mart. Much better than the $30 Crosman 760, which doesn't have a rifled barrel, so it isn't as accurate.

The Daisy come with a useless 4x15mm scope, but it is basically "free".

http://daisy.com/shopping/customer/produ鈥?/a>

If you can spend $70, Wal Mart has this for $70 and it is worth the price!

They have this for $45... not rifled, not worth it.

and the $14 BSA scope...

or the $23 BSA scope...

At least these scopes are one step above the "freebie" 4x15's included with so many cheap air rifles.

Finally, if this doesn't break the bank...

Here's some discounts for Pyramid Air:

http://www.retailmenot.com/view/pyramyda鈥?/a>|||If you don't mind pumping the gun up, take a look at the Crosman 660, 760 and 2100 pellet guns. They all retail for less than $70 American and deliver good quality, accuracy, and power levels at a modest price. Avoid the Daisy 880, as its cheaply made. (My experience is the breech-bolt tends to blow back/open sometimes during firing, especially if you don't close it just so.) However if you want a hunting air-rifle, look at the 1000fps .177 caliber or 800+ fps .22 caliber pre-charged pneumatics and spring piston rifles.|||%26gt;%26gt;I have seen the 760SK(starter kit) air rifle%26lt;%26lt;

Unless you want everything that comes with the starter kit, I would save the $$ and just buy the Crosman 760. You can pick up the 760 for around $36 at Walmart.

IMO, The Crosman 2100(AKA the Remingtin AirMaster 77) is a much nicer rifle and you can get one for around $59 at Walmart.

IMO, the Daisy 880S($46) is a slightly better rifle than the Crosman 760, but not as nice as the 2100.

If you would rather have an inexpensive spring piston air rifle over a multi-pump pneumatic(BB/Pellet) rifle. You can buy the Tech Force 34(TF34) .177 for $56.90 at Airgun Depot

http://www.airgundepot.com

%26gt;There is a typo in the specs for this rifle "540fps" - It should read 840fps

It does not sound like you're interested in spending that kind of money($140) on an air rifle, but, I did want to back up what "Benjamin L" said about the Benjamin 392 / 397 air rifles. They are great little rifles.|||The 760SK is a very good first BB/Pellet rifle to get. It's accurate and fun to shoot.

One word of caution....follow the instructions included with it and don't pump it more than 10 times or you risk damaging the piston and seals inside of the rifle.

It comes with a tip-off scope mounting rail as part of the receiver making the mounting of a airgun scope or electronic sight easy.

That particular model is what I bought my 2 boys as their first air rifle several years ago and they still own them and have fun with them on a regular basis.

Have fun -|||the 760 is good, got one i use to teach friend %26amp; family the basics on it! very accurate and very inexpencieve! kind of cheap, put well worth the money for a starter gun! if you want something that will last a life time get a benjamin 392 or 397, they are @ $140 ,and youll be teaching your children and grand children on it some day! |||I went to my local sporting goods shop and got a nice air rifle for $100 with scope. its a crossman and I have friends with crossmans so I would choose one of those|||I just got a phantom crosman and I think it works great! It doesn't have any extra crap. Just a really good pellet gun!|||Buy cheap buy twice kid.

What is the proper position for hands on the basketball when shooting?

Many times when I shoot, my hands slip on the ball. This makes the shot lean slightly to the elft or right, but its drastic enough so that a shot that would normally go in would hit the side of the backboard. I need to find the way to properly place my hands on the ball so my hands dont slip while shooting so that I can be more accurate.|||okay so what you do is put your shooting hand on the bottom of the ball while holding it make sure its balanced

then put your non shooting hand on the side of the ball to stabilize the ball, then just a flick of the wrist and voila!!

lol dont worry if you have problems in the beginning itll come to you though and itll take time

thats what happened to me|||The slipping may be due to moisture on the hands, but the proper hand positions are either the dominant hand behind the ball and the weak hand along the side or both hands along the edge of the back of the ball.|||Shooting hand on the bottom of the ball, other hand right on the side. Don't forget to keep your arms/elbows straight so that your hands could properly angle the shot.|||http://www.havenport.com/hosa/ehhowtosho鈥?/a>|||watch joakim noah...he has perfect shooting form|||choose which hand you are more comfortable with when shooting. put the ball on the ground and put the hand your most comfortable with and put it on top of it. put the other hand on the side. if you are more comfortable with your left hand put your right hand on the right side but if your more comfortable with the right hand put your left hand on the left side.then pick up the ballup to your waist and bend your shoulders.bend your knees. right before you jump push the ball up and release the ball while you jump. the rest is how you aim it and hw much power you put into it. if you are at the side and you can't see the whole square on the backboard make sure you aim it a little high and don't use too much power but if you can see the whole square aim and try to hit the square because yu have a better chance of making the shot if you are right in front of the hoop try to hit the top of the square. if your shot goes straight like a dart try to release when you reach your forehead. your shot should be like like a football throw that gores up then down. remember to follow through!! also make sure you hands are not wet or sweaty becaue maybe that is why it slips off. also try to use the offical nba or wnba ball or use a ball that isn't smooth because that makes it slippery. keep practicing!!

What advise can you provide for getting an 8 year old started in recreational pistol shooting?

I am looking for some intelligent advise from others on getting my 8 year old son involved in pistol shooting. I am an experience shooter and gun owner, but have not exposed my children to the sport very much. They have been exposed to the world of firearms though, and have been present when guns were out of the safe for cleaning, etc. My son (older than his siblings by many years) has been spoken to about not touching a gun unless I am with him, keep your finger off the trigger, etc. He and I have even been in a few gun shops, and found a pistol that fit his hands pretty well. I'm just not sure how to go about beginning the instruction process. When I taught my wife to shoot, I gave her a bit of verbal instruction on what to expect, then gave her a gun to start shooting. I would be interrested in anyone's advise on instructing a child in the sport of shooting. I would also be interrested in anyone's opinions, or personal experience with this. Thanks!|||It might be best to enroll him in a young person's gun handling course. Parents are not always the best teachers. I'm wondering if it is wise to start him with a pistol.

Most youngsters start off with a long gun to learn the rudiments. It's a lot easier from to transfer skills learned with a long gun to a hand gun than vice versa. I don't know why, it just seems to be that way esp. in the military.

Just my thoughts.|||try to go slow..you dont want to burst his head with ideals..ask him if thats really what he wants and then tell him what he wants to know.if he truly want to know..ask him if he wants to learn how to aim etc.teach him that and slowly move your way up the teaching ladder|||When I was 8 years old my father took me to a shooting range that had haystacks with balloons on them for targets. I nailed most of my targets the first time i shot a gun. Try to find a range like that, or on someone's property.|||All of these are good suggestions and your head and heart are in the right places. However, your best bet for organized schooling and hands- on training rest with the NRA. Go to the web site, www.nra.org. You can find locally sponsored, certified trainers working with young people, their parents and most times in conjunction with school teams.

Why is the Tuscon shooting - when perpetrated by a derangement said to be politically motivated?

When the Fort Hood shooting - when perpetrated by a moslem said to be by a derangement?|||The lefts attempt to point fingers at GOP/Tea Party and the conservatives to make them look bad, in order (they hope) to make themselves look good.|||Because the media is trying to sensationalize things so they get more readers/viewers.

Some in the media are trying to connect the Tucson shooting with comments made earlier by Sarah Palin, as if to say that she somehow convinced this guy to go shoot Gifford and the others. However, the shooter in this case is just crazy. Even if he does try to go with the "Palin made me do it" defense, anyone who is just 1 image or sentence away from doing something so drastic is already suffering from way more severe problems.

As for the Fort Hood shooting, others in the media focused on this shooter's religion, in an attempt to perpetrate their view that all Muslims are terrorists out to kill Americans. The reality is that this guy's religion had nothing to do with his decision to start shooting people. He didn't want to go to Iraq for peace reasons, and somehow this translated into shooting his fellow soldiers in the back.

In both cases the media is guilty of blatantly trying to bias the public's opinion of these stories instead of just doing their job and reporting the facts.|||they want to use this as quickly as possible to turn this into a political weapon on both sides.

the correct spelling is muslim.|||Because he shot politicians at a political meeting. Therefore political.|||It is the media with their political agenda reporting it in the way to help those they support in big government.|||Libs don't want to offend no moslems.

how are you susposed to shoot a basketball my dad told me to push the ball when i shoot and a website also told me that but people at the boys and girls club told me your susposed to flick your wrist they flick there wrist and can shoot from the 3 pt line i know i cant make it from the 3pt line pushing the ball but i dnt know about flicking my wrist what should i do|||heres what you do

you put the ball on your finger pad

you keep your elbow straight when you shoot

you want to get good lift on your jump shots

and you do flick your wrist and remeber to always follow through|||you are suppose to flick the ball and aim above the rim if you push it you have to have more force to do so and your aim would go all wrong|||heres wut u do::

4 steps:

-find the middle of the line. ur shooting foot (right if right handed, left fer left) should b right n front of the basket. u should hav a wide stance from shoulder 2 shoulder.

-do a "ritual" ,i guess, like dribble the ball spin it,, get the feel of it %26amp;%26amp; get readi.

-look at the hoop %26amp;%26amp; make an L with ur arm. it should b kinda lowish %26amp;%26amp; facing the hoop. bend ur legs 2 get as much power as u need.

-no, u DO NOT push the ball, u make a parachute. and aim fer the box above the basket. [[ back rim works 2 ]]

hope i helpd. :]|||first get your stance [have a gewd one]

do ur bball stuff [dribble 3 times, spin it, watever suit u]

then have the ball over ur palm lik not in but ur fingerpad are holding it. have ur shooting arm at a 90 degree and and ur guide had in the left hand side sort lik across from shooting hand.

bend the knees and push of and as the ball pushes off have flick ur wrist so that it gives the ball its arc. NO RIM SHOTS

ALL NET BABI!

HOPE i help

also website betterbasketball /better shooting|||you cant just practice

if your doing something wrong

your shooting will only become worse as the motion becomes muscle memory

the important thing is to be shooting right- here are some guidelines

there is no such thing as an ideal jumpshot as long as you follow these guides - your shot will be simple repeatable accurate and deadly

you will grow as a shooter and understand why you miss shots and more importantly what you must do to make them

make sure is the exact same release everytime releasing the ball faster or slower will only make your shot worse as you will have problems with your consistency

again i repeat DO NOT CHANGE THE FORCE OR SPEED OF YOU SHOT!!!! why should you have to practice two or more different releases? when it can all be the same with just added amounts of leg power? -theres how to get more range-

instead shoot early in the "up" of the down up motion you make when you jump this is really the key

the earlier you shoot in the up part the more power your shot will have

don't just "use your legs"

make sure you are getting all the power and stability you can get out of them because they are stronger than your arms

a shot needs to be simple and is repeatable

a release that can be used for all types of shots, free throws shots off the dribble set shots runners fade aways shots under pressure and log range shots

when you shoot, push your arm out extending it as far as it can go with your elbow locking --- this is another way to ensure consistency

if you don't push your arm as far as it will go and your arm stops short, you will have to repeat that same partial extension - thus adding variables (or things that could go wrong) and jeopardizing consistency

DO NOT SNAP YOUR WRIST!!!!! or flick it or whatever

it is hard to maintain the exact speed ind force of the snap every time. - this ensures the ball will go straight

the ball will go were yo point your arm every time

the thing you see most nba players doing is their hand flops- they aren't flicking it- theres a difference

your fingers and hand should be relaxed when you shoot

therefore your wrist will flop forward and bounce a couple of times if the locking of the elbow, the pushing of the arm to full extension

don't tense up any part of your hand because you will add extra spin and add variables to your shot

if you tense up any part of your hand or fingers when you shoot.. this action must be repeated exactly every time you shoot if you want to be consistent .. which is nearly impossible

so make sure your hand is not tense almost dead

if your doing this right the ball will go where your arm is pointing since the hand and fingers arent altering the shot

also what helps your accuracy is turning your body a little

in the video below tom is talking about this great shooter and he says in his opinion he would like his stance to be open a little more

thats what im talking about an open stance as little to 15 and as much as 40 anything else is excessive

by opening your stance you'll be able to see were the ball will go because your eyes will be aligned behind the shooting arm- (because the ball will travel where ever your arm is pointing)

shooting elbow placement-

some people like to tell you to keep your elbow in close to your body

but this creates an unnatural tension along the outer arm and wrist

instead keep your elbow out naturally - there is no true measurement on how far out it will go - it depends on how long your arms are

don't change the release due to varying distances from the basket change the amount of power your legs produce

ive said this before but i really can't stress enough how important this is... the earlier you shoot it the more power your shot will have especially for threes!!!!

you should practice you release about 5 to 8 feet from the basket whenever you can.. with no lower body power(or just a little if its not comfortable but make sure its the same amount every time) eventually if your swishing it alot close your eyes and you'll feel a closer connection to the basket and your shot

you should be at a distance where you can shoot it every time and its a perfect swish

don't be afraid to shoot high you should air for medium high arch- 45/50 to as much as 60 degrees

i guess its kind hard to know the degrees your shooting at

but just make sure your shot isn't flat and don't be afraid to shoot it up

if you ever feel you shots will be to strong just shoot it higher or release it later in the up motion of the jump (hang time)

this clip can really demonstrate some of the concepts i have stated

The Swish Method

http://swish22.com/

i really hope you look into the swish method because it really does work and i think is the #1 shooting method ever

after watching them i have a new understanding of shooting

and if you want confidence

this method will give you confidence

what's better than knowing you will make the shot

Shooting??

Ok I live in Australia and over here we have really stricked gun law's ever sinse the tasmania shooting few yrs back.. I would just like to say i am so sorry to those who lost loved onces in the shooting in the US at the uni yesterday!! But why does so much of this happen? It does go to show you that the world is indeed getting worse!! Any thoughts to share??? Do you think America needs stricker gun laws. I understand its in the american way to carry a gun and thats fine but why do people need to shoot one another%26gt;%26gt;??|||As a citizen from a country that just spent millions on outlawing most guns and passing extremely strict regulation on what few guns or left, you should be able to see how the guns are not what caused this. Wasn't there another mass shooting not long ago, after the strict laws went on the books?

This guy had been unbalanced for years. He showed every symptom of a psychopathic shooter. Gun control would not have stopped this. If he couldn't have gotten hold of a gun he would have used a bomb or poisoned the food supply or some other crazy thing. What this world needs is Nut control.

Maybe some better mental health laws that would make it easier to commit someone for examination for more than 24 hours.|||Yes, I believe America needs much stricter gun laws. I live in Australia as well so this sort of thing is not the norm, I have never seen any kind of real gun in my life other than on tv.|||Because We Have Emo people who need to quite acting like they cant handle their emotion. Everyone Can handle their emotion if they try hard enough, some people just want to act like babies and get attetion about it.|||I'm American (and female). I know very few people who own guns. So personally I don't think it is necessarily "the American way to carry a gun."

However, after this shooting I feel that I would like to purchase a gun and learn how to shoot to try and protect myself (and others) if God forbid I am ever in a situation like this.

I've seen bumper stickers that read "If guns are outlawed, then only outlaws will carry guns." I believe there is a lot of truth to that statement.

I don't think that stricter guns laws are going to solve much. If a person is mentally unstable and desperate enough, they will find some other way to commit their heinous act.

I think some people are looking for someone to blame for their own personal misery.

You asked why do people need to shoot one another? Maybe we should ask those in Baghdad why they bomb each other.

There is just so much unnecessary hate in the world.

Shooting,..?

In basketball, how should your shot be? Should it be high arc, or low arc?

And how should you grip the ball when shooting?|||First off, the grip. The best way to see what should be touching the basketball any time you are touching it (dribbling, passing, shooting, etc) is like this: put your hands together as though you are praying, then push your palms away from each other so that the heels of your hands are not touching. Anything left touching is all that should be touching the basketball. This is what coaches call the fingertips, even though it isn't just the very tip-end of your fingers.

There have been many studies done on arc for your shot. The optimum arc is to have the ball coming down to the basket in about a 30掳 angle. This is neither too high or too low. The key isn't really arc (although you don't want to get your arc too high or too low) but to put backspin on the ball as you release it. On a typical 15' shot, the ball should rotate from 3 to 7 times (5 ideally). Don't you watch it! Have a buddy watch it for you and count the rotations. When you shoot, you should NEVER watch the ball - ALWAYS keep your eye on the rim even after you release the ball. The reason for this is that you may end up looking for the ball too soon and the muscle groups flexing in your neck that move your head to look for the ball will affect your shot release. The reason you want backspin on the shot is because it will keep the shot "soft" when it gets to the rim and you have a better chance of having the ball bounce a few times on the rim before falling through.

One other thing - use the backboard when shooting inside and when shooting off either block. While I played center and power forward in college, I used the board on nearly all shots around the basket. My college coach (who retired with over 500 career wins) always told us "Either bank the ball in the basket or dunk it. Nothing else will do."|||Depends on from what range and the defense around you. If you're shooting from far away obviously it needs a higher arc. If there's a taller defender on you then the arc also needs to be pretty high. As for the grip, keep trying different styles until yo find one you're comfortable and successful with; there's no method of shooting that guarantees success nor is there any that promises failure. I mean look at Shawn Marion, he has an ugly looking shot but plays at an All-Star level.|||You should grip the ball with your fingertips, not with your palm. Also it should be in between, because if its too low it's gonna be short, to high may lead to a air-ball or hit nothing but the back of the rim|||The higher the shot the more velocity in descending. If the shot goes in dead-center, it doesn't matter. But if it's slightly off center and hits the rim, the faster its going, the harder it's going to ricochet. Does that make sense ? Not to many coaches who teach high arc. A higher arc shot is harder to control than a lower arc because it take more force to shoot that way. Does that make sense ? I hope so.

Too low is not good either, however, but it's better than too high. I use an analogy that seems to work. Did you ever watch a good darts player ? He uses a slight arc but gets the dart out in front of him with a snap of the wrist. You can use that same motion when you shoot a basketball. If I had to guess, I would say that 45-50 degrees would be the effective angle measured against the horizontal.

Let the ball rest comfortably in your hand WITHOUT resting in your palm. If your palm is one the ball, there is too much surface area in your hand that can misguide the flight of the ball. At the top of your jump, you want the ball to roll in the hand back toward the fingers. This is called the release of the ball. The intent is to shoot the ball off your fingertips. This may seem that you don't have proper control of the ball. And that is the case. But people who overcontrol the ball are typically lousy shooters. I have seen shooters go up for a shot, release the ball and have it roll off the fingertips and fall to the floor. This can happen and it did twice that I have seen. Each time, the player took his next shot the same way and made it.

There are a lot of things that can affect ones shooting. But good hand position and height of the arc are just 2 of them.|||You should have the ball on your fingerpads

Wrist ****** back

SHoot it with a high arc so that it goes over the box on the rim

45 degree angle is optimum

What are the procedures for opening an indoor shooting range in Virginia?

Me and a friend are looking into buying some land, building, opening, and operating an indoor shooting range on it. What are the procedures followed to do so? Anyone know how or a site with the proper procedures?|||While there are probably some basic things like EPA compliance and such that are common, I'm sure VA will have it's own set of rules and laws. There's a pretty good chance someone at either place would have a better idea than the average Y!A user. Of course the better option would be getting on a forum that is VA specific.

Those not destroyed disperse into space as individual atoms and are spread out to indiscernable amounts to remix with the atmosphere.|||When something falls to Earth from space, friction with the atmosphere causes it to heat up. Small pieces burn up before they get to Earth. Large pieces can make it all the way down without burning totally. If it gets blown up into small pieces, most of them will burn before they hit the ground. In addition, the major concern is the hydrazine on board. Hydrazine is one of the components of the fuel the satellite uses for manoeuvring. If the satellite is broken up, the hydrazine would totally burn up. If the satellite is allowed to fall intact, the parts that contain hydrazine might be intact when hit hits the ground, which would result in hydrazine being released at ground level. It is very toxic.

The guy above me, or below, is completly wrong. First of all, you HAVE to pay for the Xbox online feature. Xbox live is NOT free, although PSN (Playstation Network) is.

Although the Xbox Live feature DOES COST MONEY. The actual online feature built into the game to coordinate with Live is free. Only in some instances does this cost money, for example in Final Fantasy (I think 13), it costs around 13 dollars per month.

You will HAVE to pay 5 dollars a month if you want to play an online multiplayer game. This is a MUST.

For example: I have Xbox Live, and Halo 3. I have to pay 5 dollars a month for Live. But I don't have to pay any extra money for Halo 3 each month. But if I had Final Fantasy (the MMO one) I would have to pay an additional 13 per month on top of the 5 for live.

What is the best type of shotgun ammo for recreational shooting?

I want to use a remington 870 12 gauge shotgun for home defense and for target/rec. shooting eventually, and I understand that some sort of buckshot is necessary for defense by its more powerful nature. What are the different types of buckshot available, and how do they differ from each other? Also, what kind of affordable shots are good for just recreational or target shooting? Thanks!|||Buckshot is usually used for defensive purposes but its not always the best choice. The best choice depends on your environment. We carry 00 buck loads in the shotguns in our police cars because we don't know what our engagements will be like or what distance they will be at. We might be a few feet from the bad guy or we might be 50 yards away. He may be standing out in the open or he may be behind a car or other barricade. We use 00 buck because it can go through many light barricades and still take out the bad guy at close ranges. This is an advantage for us but is usually a drawback in a home defense situation.

For home defense you have the luxury of knowing what your engagement ranges will be in that it won't be any longer than the longest room in your house and you probably don't have to worry about the bad guy being barricaded. At the 10-20 foot range of most rooms any of the larger birdshot sizes (about #6 or larger) will be as effective as a 00 buck load without the danger of any pellets being able to penetrate a wall and injure or kill somebody in another room. Remember, you are liable for every projectile that you launch. This may not be a concern if you live alone in the country with no nearby neighbors but it is a huge risk if you live in an apartment building. The largest shot size we recommend for home defense is #4 buck. Its a good compromise between range, stopping power, and not too much over-penetration risk.

For recreational or target shooting I just buy whatever is on sale at WalMart or Dick's or Sports Authority. Usually a mid-powered "game load" or target load with size 7-9 shot goes on sale at least once a month and that's what I use.

.|||the tradition of using 00 buck for home defence is at least to some extent derived from the preference of police and military for the load. But their tactical needs are often very different from the average citizen in his residence. BTW the 3" shell holds 15 pellets of 00, the "short magnum" 2 3/4" holds 12, a considerable improvement over the regular shell that holds 9, without the seriously distracting recoil of the 3" shell which also reduces magazine capacity. I always recommend the short-mag shells for any buckshot size but prefer the #1 loading for a denser pattern than 00. Bigger pellets don't matter if the pattern doesnt hold tight %26amp; maximise hits. If you're relying on a lucky strike with one big ball, you may as well move up to slugs, which are lethal for defence but not recommended if you have anyone living close by. And if you have people in the same house or building, small birdshot in a low-brass, non-magnum load is plenty powerful at close quarters without putting the non-combatants at risk. Tests have shown that individual pellets of #4 birdshot can still penetrate some interior walls. But the same 1 oz. of 7 1/2 shot that you would use on rabbit or squirrel, will certainly stop an assailant if you put it right in his face or solar plexus.|||00 Buck shot is most recommended for self defense. The 2 3/4" 00 buck has 9 pellets, and the 3" 00 buck has 12 pellets which is 1 lb of lead you're shooting. Either will do just fine for self-defense. I recommend 2 3/4" since it's slightly cheaper than 3" for obvious reasons. 0 buck will work too, but most recommend 00 buck, which is what I use. I believe birdshot is used for trap %26amp; skeet shooting and is probably cheaper than 00 buck. Just ask your local gun counter when you pick up your shotgun. Shotguns I recommend for your needs are linked below. The tactical barrel is necessary for home defense and takes only a few minutes to change out. The mossberg is a combo that comes with a tactical and field barrel, perfect for your needs. It's the Mossberg 930 Home Security/Field Combo - 5 Shot (Item #85325) You'll have to navigate on the mossberg site to find it, due to their website setup, but it's under *930 special purpose* models, and it's semi-auto, so I hope that's okay, but it's perfect for home defense %26amp; recreation.

http://www.mossberg.com/products/default鈥?/a>|||For recreational shooting ( I assume you mean shooting clay targets), go with #7.5 or #8 shot. They will do the job on the targets and won't leave your shoulder bruised after shooting.

For home defense, go with 00 buckshot every time.

Birdshot WILL NOT stop the threat. It is designed to penetrate small birds, not human bodies. That is why police and military use buckshot instead of cheaper birdshot. See the link below for info on penetration. Scroll down to the 'Birdshot as a Defense Load' section.|||Buckshot isn't really a must for home defense, bird shot will still kill someone.. but if your going to get buckshot go with 00 its what the military and police use and most popular.

Different types of buckshot are 000 (triple aught), 00 (double aught), 0 (single aught), #4 -- in order from biggest to smallest

For recreational shooting I'd say Federal Field/Target loads 7 1/2 shot, 2 3/4 inch.. that's what i use. Just look for the cheapest stuff its really all the same if your just doing recreational shooting.

This is how buckshot differs:

Size ------- Nominal diameter --------- Pellets/oz

0000 ------ .38" (9.7 mm) ---------------- 5

000 ------- .36" (9.1 mm) ----------------- 6

00 ------- .33" (8.4 mm) ------------------- 8

0 ---------- .32" (8.1 mm) ------------------ 9

1 -------- .30" (7.6 mm) ------------------ 10

2 ---------- .27" (6.9 mm) ------------------ 15

3 ----------- .25" (6.4 mm) ------------------ 18

4 ------------- .24" (6 mm) ------------------ 21

Table from Wikipedia--- buckshot size 0000,1 , 2 and 3 are all very rare|||The best kind for recreational shooting is the cheapest that you can find. I don't really know anything about buck shot. I would probably use what ever is near the shotgun if I used one for self defense. Back during the Great Depression (not the recent one) a guy that lived near where I live caught a chicken thief in his hen house and hit him full in the face with a load of bird shot. The guy hit the ground dead.

How common is it to see a shooting star?

Just wondering, how common is it to look up at the sky and see a shooting star, or two in the space of 10 minutes.|||It can be very common especially when you have a new moon, no ambient light, and watch the sky during a meteor show.

Keep in mind that shooting stars really aren't stars at all. They are debris from space buring up entering earths atmosphere.|||That's pretty good on a normal night. Could have been debris or a satellite coming down.

I'm glad you asked because I needed to check for this year. The Persieids Meteor shower is one of the easiest to watch in North America because it is one of the bigger ones and it is in August every year when you don't mind so much laying outside.

However only 1 in 10000000000 are big enough to cause widspread damage.|||2 in 10 minutes, not at all unusual. depending on the time, after midnight you are heading into the space in front of earth instead of being shadowed by earth before midnight, 1 per minute or two minutes is normal.|||If you have little light pollution, very common indeed.|||On clear nights I have seen one every 5 minutes or so, only when the sky was very dark and clear though. Northern CA, Northeastern CT, or NH|||Is very comon , small metorites bombard the earth all the time.|||Well right now there is the Perseid meteor shower (will peak sometime around August 12) so it is pretty common.

I am sorry to burst your bubble.|||Its random.|||It most certainly is not random. And they are neither steroids nor asteroids. Asteroids are by definition at least 50 metres in size.

Shooting stars are properly known as Meteor Showers, and are made up of small particles which burn out in the upper atmosphere, and that is what you see when you know where to look.

Earth passes through the debris left behind by a particular comet at a particular time of the year. in its journey round the sun. That is why the Perseod meteor shower is always in August. Also all meteors in any particular shower have the same point from which they radiate in the sky, the radiant. They can go in any direction, but they have the same "origin" (in the sense of (0,0) is the origin on a graph),

I give below a table of upcoming meteor showers. This really is just like the Met Office predicting showers of rain, the phenomenon is well understood.

OVERVIEW

From earliest times, humankind has noticed flurries of meteors that seemed to emanate from particular points in the sky at particular times of the year. These flurries, now called meteor showers, are produced by small fragments of cosmic debris entering the earth's atmosphere at extremely high speed. When the number of meteors is large, it is called a meteor storm.

Each time a periodic comet swings by the Sun, it produces large amounts of small particles which will eventually spread out along the entire orbit of the comet to form a meteoroid "stream". If the Earth's orbit and the comet's orbit intersect at some point, then the Earth will pass through this stream for a few days at roughly the same time each year, producing a meteor shower. The parent bodies (comets) of most known meteor showers have now been identified.

Most meteors seen in meteor showers are caused by particles smaller than a grain of sand. As a result it is very rare to have any meteorites hit the ground during a typical meteor shower.

Because meteor shower particles are all traveling in parallel paths, and at the same velocity, they will all appear to radiate from a single point in the sky to an observer below. This radiant point is caused by the effect of perspective, similar to railroad tracks converging at a single vanishing point on the horizon when viewed from the middle of the tracks.

PERSEIDS

The Perseids are a prolific meteor shower associated with the comet Swift-Tuttle.

The shower is visible from mid-July each year, but the bulk of its activity falls between August 8th and 14th with a peak on August 12th. During the peak, rates of a hundred or more meteors per hour can be registered.

Meteor showers can be seen when Earth moves through a meteor stream. The stream in this case is called the Perseid cloud and it stretches along the orbit of the Comet Swift-Tuttle. The cloud is comprised of particles ejected by the comet as it passed by the Sun. Most of the dust in the cloud today is approximately a thousand years old.

However, there is also a relatively young filament of dust in the stream that boiled off the comet in 1862. The approximate rate of meteors originating from this filament is much higher than normal.

The Perseids are called so because the point they appear to be coming from, called the radiant, is in the constellation of Perseus. However, they can be spotted all around the sky. Because of the positioning of Swift-Tuttle's orbit, Perseids are mostly visible in the northern hemisphere.

The famous Perseid meteor shower has been observed for about 2000 years, with the first known information on these meteors coming from the far east.

Do try and find somewhere away from street lighting and try and get a glimpse of them, When they are cascading through the skies at the rate of !00 an hour, you shouldn't have to wait long to see one!

Just find out where Perseus will be in the sky at the time you propose to view, and how to find Perseus from other better-known constellations like Orion.|||Shooting stars are steroids. We can more shooting stars in remote areas where there is no bright light during nights.

Also, certain areas of the globe attracts more asteroids.|||Veronica be real-any one that sees you princess has seen a shooting star-thanks too-david

If “shooting star” is usually a grain of sand space that burns as light. What exactly causes this burning?

A “shooting star” is usually a grain of sand from outer space that burns up and gives off light as it enters the atmosphere. What exactly causes this burning?|||Friction with atmospheric air at very high velocity of 70kilometer per second.|||When the piece of "sand", actually called a meteoroid, enters the atmosphere it rub against the particles in the atmosphere. Creating friction and heat, it also gives off light. What Sheldon said was it moving towards the sun is actually a comet, that has nothing to with shooting stars. Do not refer to it as "space sand" it makes you sound very unintelligent.

The "sand" is called a meteor in space, a meteoroid in the atmosphere, and a meteorite if it makes it to the ground on Earth.|||Friction causes heat. The shooting star is travelling at very high (and variable) speed. The friction with the air causes it to heat up, As it heats up more it turns white hot and emits visible light.

Robert 7264 is wrong, A meteoroid is small body moving in the solar system on a collision course with the earth's atmosphere. It becomes a meteor when it travels through the earths atmosphere. If it hits the earth and some of it survives the impact, that part which survives is a meteorite.|||It doesn't burn, it just gets very hot by "friction"*. when it enters the atmosphere, it is very fast. When it hits the air, the air slows the particle down and the particle and the air get both hotter.

It is exactly the same kind of phenomena that makes your hand get warm when you slip down a rope, or what makes the brakes on sport cars or aircraft glow red while braking.

*See definition of ram pressure before just copying what Phil Plait says.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aerodynamic…

The highest temperatures don't occur, where most hot air is passing by, but where the compressing work is done.

Short: Phil Plaits popular explanation of ram pressure is not experimentally validated, for example on real spacecraft. Actually, the rule of thumb for aerospace engineer students is: Beyond Mach 8, air behaves like a incompressible fluid because of the viscosity of air. There is no significant change in pressure anymore.

And he is in the same explanation also wrong on the sensibility of Space Shuttle tiles: While the foam inside the tiles is really very soft, the outside of the tiles is Reaction Cured Glass, a pretty hard, but brittle material. Without this coating outside, the tiles really react to the air flow as Phil Plait paints in his explanation.

But is it really necessary to have a long scientific argument to explain that the irreversible thermodynamic process that removes kinetic energy from the meteor is the interaction with the air?|||Robert said, "The "sand" is called a meteor in space, a meteoroid in the atmosphere, and..."

Actually it's the other way around. "Meteor" is the oldest name. A meteor is a streak of light in the sky. People called it that before they ever knew the cause. "Meterorite" came next. It was what they called the unusual rocks that they found in the crater where a meteor touched the ground. The "ite" suffix appears in the names of many things (especially minerals) that are found in the ground. Finally, when scientists were able to overcome their skepticism and accept the fact that rocks actually DO fall from the sky, they coined the name "meteoroid" to describe a rock in space that potentially could become a meteor/meteorite.

__________________________

Several people said, "...friction..."

It's actually not friction that heats a meteoroid to incandescence. It's the compression of the air in front of the object as the object hits the atmosphere at hypersonic velocity. Next time you pump up a tire with a bicycle pump, feel the cylinder after you're done. It can be warm, or even hot. That's because air gets hot (as predicted by the Ideal Gas Law) when you compress it.|||Most people would say due to friction, the glow is actually due to the atmospheric ram pressure that heats the meteoroid so that it glows and creates a shining trail of gases and melted meteoroid particles. The gases include vaporised meteoroid material and atmospheric gases that heat up when the meteoroid passes through the atmosphere.|||Meteors compress the air beneath them as they fall, so the air heats up until it is hot enough to burn the meteor. A similar phenomenon occurs when you inflate a bicycle tire with a hand pump. The pump gets heated by the air it compresses.|||The shooting star is called a meteorite.

The cause of its burning is that the gravitational pull of the earth causes the "shooting star" to burn|||Friction with the air causes it to burn up on entry.

Shooting video on a point and shoot camera? How long will it last?

I have a Sony DSC-W1 and was planning on shooting underwater videos. I'm planning on turning on the camera and immediately shoot video at 640x320 30fps, until the battery runs out.

So two questions....

If I got a 8gb flash card how much video would I get under unlimited battery life? And how long does the battery last while filming in that format (640x320 30fps)?|||Given the age of your camera, I doubt it could actually use an 8gb card, due to differences in the type of formatting that the larger cards take.

However, if it can utilize that card, it looks like you'd get close to 90 minutes of video on the 640x480 "fine" resolution. It's all in your manual - page 109.
